CIRCUS PERFORMANCE

"UNDERNEATH THE ARCHES"   *Song

A Shadow Shot tune association.....

At the circus, two hours of shadow shot opportunities!    This is one of many.

Two mattresses below await the simultaneous  cannon 'ball' shots of two performers.
(Better than looking at the caged, sad looking animals, performing at the crack of the  whip!)

*The song:  words and music by Bud Flanigan 1931, recorded by the Andrew Sisters in 1948,  A song much sung during the WW II  years in Great Britain, perhaps even in the desert.

                        Underneath the arches,
                         I dream my dreams away;
                        Underneath the arches
                         On cobble stones I lay.

                         Ev'ry night you'll find me
                         Tired out and worn;
                         Happy when the day light comes creeping,
                         Heralding the dawn.

                         Sleeping when it's raining
                         And sleeping when it's fine,
                         Trains rattling by above!

                         Pavement is my pillow
                         No matter where I stay
                         Underneath the arches,
                         I dream my dreams away.

  3. I always find the circus alternately fascinating and a bit sad.

  4. Cool photo. Interesting song and even though it doesn't mention shadows seems to carry shadows in its words.

  5. I was singing along in my head as I read the words. I like your shot-the way the shadow is played around with by the enormous spotlight.

  6. What a complex series of shadows.

    And my choir is singing the song at our next concert! Coincidence! You realise, of course, that it was written at the time of the Great Depression when people were sleeping on the streets.

  7. Yes, a good example of a melody that became 'fashionable', a much loved pop song in its time, and now can actually be replayed on Google by anyone wishing to bring it back to life. Rinkly recently wrote a rime called Platitudes, about which we have had conversations on the subject of doing our thing whether it is in fashion, or not!

About Me

My photo
JANUS - looking backwards and forwards is a Janus trait - for me a way to record the "in between thought", whether in retrospect, or as a notion for the future. I make original prints, currently etchings. I sometimes write and take photographs. I am inspired by what I see and read. Although postings are chronologically recorded by date and time in this protocol, the images exhibited, often seen in different stages of production, are from another time. So, with each new posting, earlier postings can undergo revision or amplification as will be noted, or requested. The addition of a SNAPSHOTS Blog and a VIRGINIA WOOLF Blog are included because my different interests tend to influence what I do as an artist. There will be a Family Blog, too, for the same reason.
