CHANGING PLACES by Susan Vencl

I was invited to take pictures at the Cunningham Dance Studio, at Westbeth, 55 Bethune St. in the Village.   My friend, Susan, an independent choreographer, was presenting 3 performances
of her latest dance, CHANGING PLACES, and I went 'back stage', so to speak, to watch the warm ups of dancers, technicians and the stage preparations.

I had no idea that I would quickly lose the above photo opportunity, as heavy curtains were drawn to create in intimate stage setting

Testing the complex lighting systems quickly followed

Above is Susan, on the right, with her five dancers

The dancers are:  Lisa Bostwick, Erin Pellecchia, Sara Roer, Julia Sabangan, Lindy Schmedt

Sound Engineer, Nathan Leigh,

Lighting Designer:  Mike Riggs

Costumer:  Sydney Maresca

Music by Steve Reich, Composition:
Drumming, 1970

More testing and many more spectacular shots as each light was tested

A rest.  NOT in the script!

  1. Your photography gets better and better. Shot one reminds me of the work of a photographer who lectured to my social group last week. He would have been very much in favour of the moving figure. What a lovely chance to take these shots.

About Me

My photo
JANUS - looking backwards and forwards is a Janus trait - for me a way to record the "in between thought", whether in retrospect, or as a notion for the future. I make original prints, currently etchings. I sometimes write and take photographs. I am inspired by what I see and read. Although postings are chronologically recorded by date and time in this protocol, the images exhibited, often seen in different stages of production, are from another time. So, with each new posting, earlier postings can undergo revision or amplification as will be noted, or requested. The addition of a SNAPSHOTS Blog and a VIRGINIA WOOLF Blog are included because my different interests tend to influence what I do as an artist. There will be a Family Blog, too, for the same reason.
